Makiko: Hi, Helen. How was your trip to Hokkaido during the winter vacation?
Helen: Very good. It was my first time to visit Hokkaido. I enjoyed watching some kinds of birds and animals living in cold weather. I saw tancho , red-crowned cranes, near Kushiro city.
Makiko: A Tell me about tancho .
Helen: Sure. I could see the red parts of their heads and the black parts of their faces and wings. They were flying over the snow. They looked very beautiful, so I tried to write a haiku in English.

Makiko: Oh, he is very kind to living things.
Helen: He said,“Look at that bird. It doesn’t look as fine as the others. Birds coming here sometimes eat things that are bad for them, and become sick. Some people visiting this place

Makiko: I am sorry to hear that. What should we do?
Helen: He said,“Students living here want more birds to come and to stay here. They’ll clean rivers and lakes when spring vacation comes.” It will be nice if we can help them.
Makiko: Yes! Let’s talk about it in our class.
